JUDGE JACK LU was appointed to chair the Massachusetts Sentencing Commission by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick in 2014. The Sentencing Commission is composed of three judges, three prosecutors, three defense attorneys and the heads of the major state criminal justice agencies, all appointed by the Governor. Judge Lu is also the lead Superior Court Judge for a Bureau of Justice Assistance funded HOPE Demonstration Field Experiment, a random control trial of HOPE probation supervision of high-risk probationers, and helps to lead a multi-agency criminal justice innovation group; both are in Essex County in Northeastern Massachusetts. Judge Lu’s professional interests include criminal justice and sentencing innovation, leadership and management. Judge Lu was appointed to the Boston Municipal Court in 2001 by Governor Argeo Paul Cellucci, and to the Massachusetts Superior Court by Governor Mitt Romney in 2006, where he is also a Regional Administrative Justice. He is an Adjunct Professor of Law at Boston University School of Law and has taught sentencing at New England Law, Boston. Judge Lu is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and earned his J.D. at Boston University School of Law.
