The Robina Institute was formed in 2011 with 3 areas of criminal justice research: Criminal Law Theory, Criminal Justice Policy, and Sentencing Law and Policy. Criminal Law Theory was led by Professor Antony Duff (now retired). This area of research often focused on asking "What is the proper role of the criminal law in a modern democracy that values liberty and diversity?" and "On what principles should it be based?"
By engaging in principled normative theorizing, this area of research aimed to develop substantive, often radical proposals to reinvigorate and reform our systems of criminal law.
